托马斯 莫尔 （1779-1852），爱尔兰著名诗人，歌词作家 。他以诗歌《夏日里最后的玫瑰》广为世人所知。莫尔把他对世间万象的不同见解作出微妙的描绘。 许多作曲家把他的诗作品用来谱曲。这首诗陈述在沉寂的深夜里，回忆往日的快乐，为逝去的朋友们哀伤， 并暗示自己将不久于人世。

拉尔夫 爱默生 (1803 – 1882) 是美国十九世纪散文家，思想家，哲学家和诗人。 新英格兰超越主义 - 美国文艺复兴的最重要人物。真正的美国文学始于爱默生。这首诗是爱默生最著名的诗作。诗人感慨地说，日子一天天流失，叹息自己懒惰，浪费人生时光。而别人由于努力勤奋，获得丰硕成就。 诗句描述时光的无情，对任何人不施予青睐，且不再回返。
译者：吕丁倩，江苏常熟人。出身教育世家，曾是内蒙古下乡知青。1977年考入内蒙古师院外语系。 毕业后从事高校英语教学。后赴美国读研，从事翻译和写作。英文古典诗中译文收入外国诗集，由《漓江出版社》出版。文章散见各主要网络公号。近几年在哈佛大学做研学翻译。
